What Is Simpsons Paradox in Statistics

A  paradox  is a statement or phenomenon that on the surface seems contradictory. Paradoxes help to reveal the underlying truth beneath the surface of what appears to be absurd. In the field of statistics, Simpsons paradox demonstrates what kinds of problems result from combining data from several groups. With all data, we need to exercise caution. Where did it come from? How was it obtained? And what is it really saying? These are all good questions that we should ask when presented with data. The very surprising case of Simpsons paradox shows us that sometimes what the data seem to be saying is not really the case. An Overview of the Paradox Suppose we are observing several groups, and establish a relationship or  correlation  for each of these groups. Simpson’s paradox says that when we combine all of the groups together and look at the data in aggregate form, the correlation that we noticed before may reverse itself. This is most often due to lurking variables that have not been considered, but sometimes it is due to the numerical values of the data. Example To make a little more sense of Simpsons paradox, lets look at the following example. In a certain hospital, there are two surgeons. Surgeon A operates on 100 patients, and 95 survive. Surgeon B operates on 80 patients and 72 survive. We are considering having surgery performed in this hospital and living through the operation is something that is important. We want to choose the better of the two surgeons. We look at the data and use it to calculate what percentage of surgeon As patients survived their operations and compare it to the survival rate of the patients of surgeon B. 95 patients out of 100 survived with surgeon A, so 95/100 95% of them survived.72 patients out of 80 survived with surgeon B, so 72/80 90% of them survived. From this analysis, which surgeon should we choose to treat us? It would seem that surgeon A is the safer bet. But is this really true? What if we did some further research into the data and found that originally the hospital had considered two different types of surgeries, but then lumped all of the data together to report on each of its surgeons. Not all surgeries are equal, some were considered high-risk emergency surgeries, while others were of a more routine nature that had been scheduled in advance. Of the 100 patients that surgeon A treated, 50 were high risk, of which three died. The other 50 were considered routine, and of these 2 died. This means that, for a routine surgery, a patient treated by surgeon A has a 48/50 96% survival rate. Now we look more carefully at the data for surgeon B and find that of 80 patients, 40 were high risk, of which seven died. The other 40 were routine and only one died. This means that a patient has a 39/40 97.5% survival rate for a routine surgery with surgeon B. Now which surgeon seems better? If your surgery is to be a routine one, then surgeon B is actually the better surgeon. If we look at all surgeries performed by the surgeons, A is better. This is quite counterintuitive. In this case, the lurking variable of the type of surgery affects the combined data of the surgeons. History of Simpsons Paradox Simpson’s paradox is named after Edward Simpson, who first described this paradox in the 1951 paper The Interpretation of Interaction in Contingency Tables from the  Journal of the Royal Statistical Society. Pearson and Yule each observed a similar paradox half a century earlier than Simpson, so Simpson’s paradox is sometimes also referred to as the Simpson-Yule effect. There are many wide-ranging applications of the paradox in areas as diverse as  sports statistics  and  unemployment data. Any time that data is aggregated, watch out for this paradox to show up.

Edgar Allan Poe was a prominent writer during the era of Romanticism, but Poe’s poems focused primarily on the Dark Romanticism, developed under Romanticism. The era of Romanticism was commonly described as showing raw emotion, but there was still a conflict in the story. The purpose of Romanticism was for the writer to feel free; there were no rules when it came to this form of writing. Dark Romanticism was looking at the gothic side of stories rather than the heroism stories, which focused more on death, and the flaws of humans. Dark Romanticism also focused on the evil aspect of writings rather than the heroic part to stories. Edgar Allan Poe’s poems are shown more in this type of writing rather than the typical Romantic writings. When looking more into Dark Romanticism readers are able to see how Poe could have connected his personal turmoil to his poems. This quote shows readers that writers during the Dark Romanticism era used their own sufferings in order to make the stories seem more dramatic and almost human. Reaching My Goals Essay Example For Students

Reaching My Goals Essay My personal and professional goals are something I have stood by and strive to continue on a daily basis. My goals will not only progress my career, but be an example for my children. The following three professional and personal goals that I have developed over the past 2 years will describe my future. It is important that my children see how successful a person can be when they put their mind to something. I also want my children to understand the amount of time and effort it takes to achieve the goals I have set for myself. I am not a traditional student. I didnt start my college career until the age of despite the urging of my parents. I got married and started a family early at the age of twenty one and decided being when my children young is I began working as a CNA when my children got a little older I my job to downsizing the facility. I call this my blessing in disguise otherwise I have gone back to school to get my associates degree in 2009. I was making a living and supporting my family prior to losing my job. Financially, going from two incomes to one was difficult, but in the end it was worth it because the lessons I learned and the goals I achieved will show my children never give up on your dream and sometimes the path . I have had my Associates degree for two years. I was fortunate enough to get a job immediately out of school; and I find it very rewarding. Recently, Ive decided it was now or never to go back and get my Bachelors degree. I realize having my Bachelors degree will also help me support my growing family. According to Mahger (2011), The U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that bookkeepers, accountants and auditing clerks all jobs obtained with just an associate degree made a median salary of $34,030 in 2010. Those who complete a bachelors degree may have more earnings potential anywhere from $43,000 per year to $100,000. With adding an additional child last year and raising inflation , a larger salary would help give my children everything they need and . A Bachelors degree will also help me become a well-rounded person. Since I am a numbers person, my writing and theory ability could use some improvement. According to Weitz (2008), A well-rounded education is the pursuit of comprehensive knowledge, balanced across a wide range of subjects. With the purpose of education being to prepare students to become competent, contributing citizens, the broad content of a well-rounded education expands future options, professionally, socially, and personally. Liberal Arts and Classical Education are considered well-rounded studies designed to develop intellectual growth, versus studying for a specific skill or profession. Obtaining a Bachelors degree with not only improve my employment opportunities and providing upward career mobility, but also make me a better person. My main career goal is to become a senior analyst with my current employer, Investors Community Bank. I would have a lot more job responsibilities, and an overall larger contribution to the company. There are many advancement opportunities at my employer and becoming a senior analyst would be the next step to achieve. My senior analyst has been a great mentor to me and has greatly contributed to the analyst I am today. Senior analysts assist with training of new employees. I enjoy sharing my experiences and knowledge with anyone who could benefit from it. My professional and personal goals help me give me a path to follow and will help me achieve my full potential. My goals are achievable but challenging while being a mom, wife, and a full time worker, which pushes me even more.

This essay was written to show the advantages and disadvantages of the Young Offenders Act over the previous Juvenile Delinquents Act. Also it should give a theoretical understanding of the current Canadian Juvenile-Justice system, the act and it's implications and the effects of the young offenders needs and mental health on the outcome of the trials. In the interest of society the young offenders act was brought forth on april second 1984. This act was created to ensure the rights and the needs of a young person. Alan W. Leshied says "On one hand the justice and legal objectives of the act are being effectively realized while on the other hand the needs and treatment aspects of it leave much to be desired." The research of the Young offenders act is still ongoing but Leshied says that it is becoming clear that the custody positions have been in dispute since the act came into effect. The old Juvenile delinquency act states in section 38 "The care and custody and discipline of a juv enile delinquent shall approximate as nearly as maybe that which should be given by his parents, and... as far as practability every juvenile delinquent shall be treated, not as a criminal, but as a misguided and misdirected child . . . needing aid, encouragement, help and assistance."(Page 72) If a youth is close to the adult age of 18 years they could be transfered to the adult justice system. This means that they would be given the same sentences as an adult including and up to life in prison. Many people have tried to correct this problem that they see as a weakness. Yet, so far their attempts have failed. Another weakness they find, is that the courts are expensive and unsatisfactory methods of dealing with crime that is not very serious. Before the fabrication of legal aid most young offenders were not able to obtain legal services. "Subsection 11 (4) provides that, were a young person wishes to obtain counsel but is not able to do so, the youth-court judge shall refer the you ng person to the provincial legal-aid, or assistance program. If no such program is available or the young person is unable to obtain counsel through an available program, the youth court judge may, and on the request of the young person shall direct the young person to be represented by counsel." To establish a relationship between the young offender and the lawyer, thew lawyer must be able to receive instructions from his/her client. Usually there is little difficulty either receiving or carrieing out the instructions of his/her client. Special problems can arise when the client is a young person. The problems faced by this, is the young person may not be able to communicate with counsel. While the lawyer and young person need not a specific statement for the client as to a Cont. From Page 1 -2- preferred outcome it should take form of a general expression of the client's feelings or attitudes in the major issues of the precedings the young person must be able to make decisions th at may hold significant repercussions. Mental health of the young offender can also be a problem. Currently this issue is not addressed in the Young Offenders Act, before the mental health act can be enacted, extremely dangerous behaviour must be displayed. Before the age of 16 they are sometimes placed in hospitals for a short time under the authority of the legal guardians.

ACT Scoring Error Did You Get Someone Else's Scores by Mistake SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Did you take the ACT and get a lower score than you expected? Do you think there may have been a scoring error? Maybe you filled in a section incorrectly or your exam wasn’t graded properly? Scoring errors on the ACT are rare, but they are possible, and there are ways to identify and correct these errors. This guide will go over the steps you need to take in order to verify your scores, as well as what you should do to improve your score on future ACTs if there was no grading error. Did ACT, Inc. Make a Mistake? It’s very rare for ACT, Inc. to make a mistake when grading exams or reporting scores, but it does happen. Each year, hundreds of students who took the ACT request score verification, and some errors are found and corrected. ACT, Inc. does make mistakes, but it is important to know that these mistakes are very uncommon. The vast majority of students who take the ACT have their exam graded and reported properly. Before you begin the process of verifying your scores, you should be aware that the most likely scenario is that you simply didn’t do as well on the ACT as you expected you would. This can be disappointing to hear, and while you may wish this were a world where one day you come home to find a letter telling you that your ACT score is actually 5 points higher than originally reported, at some point you do have to overcome denial and focus on improving your scores for future exams. Potential Causes of Scoring Errors There are multiple reasons why a test may have been scored incorrectly. Below are some of the most common causes of scoring errors. Errors Caused by ACT, Inc. Sending a test taker the wrong score report. Incorrectly printing a question or section time on a test booklet. Problems with scanning answer sheets or essays. Errors Caused by the Test Taker Filling answers in for the wrong section. Filling in the wrong test identifying code. Writing the essay with pen instead of pencil Incorrectly filling in answer bubbles (not filling the bubble in all the way, not shading dark enough, etc.) How to Determine If There Is a Scoring Error If you're concerned that your ACT scores are wrong, you have two options: ordering a Test Information Release and requesting hand scoring. I'll go over what each of these involves in the order that I would recommend you approach them. Order a Test Information Release If after looking over your ACT score report you feel that you scored very differently from what you were expecting and don’t understand why, you can order a Test Information Release (TIR). A TIR provides you with a copy of all of the multiple choice questions from your ACT, a list of your answers, the answer key, and scoring instructions. This information allows you to see exactly which questions you answered incorrectly. If you took the ACT with Writing, you will also receive the writing prompt and essay scoring rubric. Even if you don't suspect a scoring error, TIRs can be useful as study material for future ACTs to help you learn what mistakes you made and what areas you need to improve in. ACT, Inc. offers the option to order a TIR when you register for the ACT, and you may have already ordered one. If not, you can order a TIR up to three months after you take the ACT. Note that TIRs are only available for ACTs taken on national test dates in April, June, and December, and they cost $20 to order. You can order one by filling out the form on ACT website and mailing it in. Once you receive your TIR, look over every question carefully. Are the answers the report says you marked the same ones you remember choosing? Now that you have the answer key, do you understand why those are the correct answers? It may simply be that you thought you were solving questions correctly but actually weren’t. If this is the case, skip down to the â€Å"What to do if there wasn’t a scoring error† section, and learn ways to raise your score for future ACTs. If something still seems strange, and your answer list doesn’t match with what you remember answering on the day of the test, you may want to order score verification (hand scoring). Score Verification Score verification, or hand-scoring, is a way to confirm your ACT scores if you feel your exam was graded improperly or if you think you may have marked your answer sheet incorrectly (such as filling in answers in the wrong section). You can request the ACT score verification service if, after ordering a TIR, you still believe your exam was graded incorrectly. In most cases you'll want to order a TIR before hand scoring because the TIR is cheaper and can give you a lot of useful information that, in most cases, convinces you that your test was graded properly. However, you can also order hand scoring without ordering a TIR first if you think there is an issue that will be solved by hand scoring. Reasons to request score verification before a TIR: You think you wrote your essay with pen instead of pencil. Your essay isn’t visible on your free score report. You think you bubbled your answers in on the wrong section. You think you used the wrong test identifying code. To request hand scoring, you need to fill out this request form and mail it to the ACT up to 12 months after taking the exam. You'll need to write in your name (the official one you used for the test), address, and date of birth along with the ACT ID, testing location, and test date from your original score report. Also include a check payable to ACT Student Services with the applicable fee. Score verification costs $50 for the multiple choice questions, $40 for the essay, or $90 to have both verified. Mail all of these materials along with your request for Score Verification to: ACT Student Services P.O. Box 414 Iowa City, IA 52243-0414 ACT Inc. will inform you by mail of the results of your score verification within three to five weeks. The letter will tell you if your original scores were confirmed to be correct or not. If an error was found, your scores will be changed and your corrected reports will be sent to all your previous score recipients (such as colleges you sent your scores to) at no cost. Your score verification fee will also be refunded. It’s also possible for you to be in the room during the verification process, although you won’t have access to the test questions. However, this option is not really necessary unless you are particularly worried about your test being scored incorrectly again. If you are interested in this, state it in the letter you mail along with the rest of the information to the address above. The ACT doesn’t provide a lot of details about this service, but they do state that extra fees apply. You may want to call ACT Customer Service at 319-337-1270 to learn more before requesting this option. Unlike SAT hand score verification, if you order hand scoring for the ACT, your score will never go down if an error is found that isn’t in your favor. Your score can only go up or stay the same if you request ACT hand scoring. Special note: In the past, if you ordered hand scoring for your ACT essay, your essay was be reread and rescored. Now, however, getting your essay hand-scored just means ACT, Inc. will confirm your essay was scored following ACT guidelines (two independent graders, with a third grader stepping in if the two scores differed by more than one point in any domain. What if there was no mistake, and that really is the score you got? Read on to find out what to do. What to Do If There Wasn't a Scoring Error Don’t feel like it is the end of the world if your ACT score is lower than you thought it would be. Your standardized test scores are only one component of your application, and you may have time to retake the ACT and aim for a higher score. ACT Inc. offers a service that allows you to choose which ACT scores you send to schools. This means that, as long as the schools you’re applying to don’t require you to send all your ACT scores (and we have a complete list of the schools that require all ACT scores sent), then one low ACT score will not affect your application if you retake the ACT and receive a higher score. It's also normal for your ACT scores to fluctuate from one test to another. Drops in score of up to three composite points are normal and can occur just due to chance. Even though you’ve already taken the test before, you still need to study and practice for the next time. One of the best ways to do this is to take complete, strictly timed practice tests. Doing so will help you track your progress over time and help you identify where you are improving and where you still need to practice. Taking complete practice ACTs will also give you a more accurate estimate of what your score will be on a real ACT than simply taking one section at a time would. Review your results for these practice tests carefully so you learn what mistakes you made and how to avoid making them again in the future. Be Prepared on Test Day Simple logistics can be enough to have a significant impact on your test scores. On test day, make sure you are confident and prepared so you don’t let any outside circumstances affect your scores. Get enough sleep the night before the exam, bring a snack with you on test day, and know how to get to your test center. Having these things set will help you focus all your concentration on the test. Also, make sure you give yourself enough time before retaking the ACT. I recommend between two and four months so that you have enough time to practice and improve. Summary It’s very rare for ACT, Inc. to send incorrect ACT scores, but it does happen. Notwithstanding these positive reforms, there are still those who categorized that the Obamacare remains favorable to the affluent or the moneyed middle class who could save more from the healthcare benefits. They opined that there are still about 25% of entrepreneurs that are uninsured, 50% are dependent on their respective family, and there are about 60% with private insurance enjoy incomes at about 400% above the poverty level (NCSL, 2012). These affluent will qualify for tax credits other than the fact that it can subsidize healthcare to 83% small business owners that are currently considered not insured (NCSL, 2012).
